Boba and bubble tea are the same drink. "Bubble tea" is the usual name in the UK, Europe and Taiwan's own English signage; "boba" is standard in the United States and increasingly everywhere else. "Boba" can also mean just the pearls.

Where the names come from

  • Bubble tea — from the foam produced when tea, milk and sugar are shaken with ice. The bubbles are on top, not at the bottom.
  • Boba — from the Chinese slang term for the large tapioca pearls, which arrived with the drink in California and stuck.
  • Pearl milk tea — the literal translation of zhenzhu naicha, still the common name in Taiwan.

How the words are used

BobaThe drink, or the pearls aloneUS, Canada, online
Pearl milk teaThe classic black milk tea versionTaiwan, China

Does the drink itself differ?

No. A boba shop and a bubble tea shop sell the same thing: a tea base, milk or fruit, sweetener, ice and toppings. What varies is the menu — American boba shops lean towards fruit teas and creamers, UK and European bubble tea shops towards brewed tea bases and fresh milk. When ordering in the UK, saying either word will get you the same drink.
